Abstract: Traditional Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) systems often struggle with context fragmentation in specialized academic domains, leading to factual inconsistencies and poor retrieval performance. This paper introduces the Intent-Aware Asymmetric Retrieval-Augmented Framework (IA-ARF), a RAG architecture that adapts retrieval behavior to query structure. IA-ARF decouples query understanding from retrieval execution through a deterministic Intent Router based on Granularity, Scope, and Dependency (GSD) analysis, which maps queries to specialized retrieval strategies. To address semantic fracturing, the framework employs asymmetric indexing, retrieving fine-grained units for search while expanding to their parent sections for generation, thereby preserving regulatory conditions and exceptions.
Evaluated on official academic documents from the University of Information Technology, Vietnam National University, IA-ARF with a lightweight Gemma-3:4B model improves context relevance from 63.57% to 94.28%, context recall from 40% to 79.57%, faithfulness from 31.02% to 86.36%, and answer correctness from 33.81% to 59.92%, while reducing end-to-end latency by 21.8%. These results show that the proposed approach enables lightweight models to deliver accurate, policy-grounded academic advising in privacy-sensitive educational settings.
