Abstract:Buy-now-pay-later (BNPL) embeds short-term credit within ecommerce checkout. This study examines how perceived BNPL checkout embeddedness is associated with self-reported BNPL-related overspending through perceived installment affordability and impulsive buying. S-O-R organizes an interface-to-appraisal-to-behavior chain, with choice architecture and technology affordance specifying the checkout stimulus, mental accounting the affordability appraisal, and consumer vulnerability the safeguards. An online survey yielded 207 responses and 114 quality-screened, predominantly student BNPL users in Ho Chi Minh City. The six-factor measurement model fit well (CFI = 0.957, TLI = 0.950, RMSEA = 0.058, SRMR = 0.064). Sandwich-robust latent estimates were positive from embeddedness to affordability (β = 0.538), affordability to impulsive buying (β = 0.507), and impulsive buying to overspending (β = 0.396; all p < 0.001); affordability also related directly to overspending (β = 0.513). Aligned 10,000-resample bootstraps confirmed the serial route (β = 0.089, 95% CI [0.034, 0.173]) and the stronger shorter affordability route (β = 0.198, 95% CI [0.083, 0.336]). Focal paths remained stable under alternative exclusion rules (N = 141 and N = 152). Although cross-sectional and self-reported, the evidence motivates equal-prominence total cost, cumulative-obligation disclosure, and calibrated checkout friction.
