Abstract:This study examines consumer adoption of AI-powered shopping tools by contextualizing the Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT) within the emerging AI-assisted shopping environment. Specifically, the study investigates the effects of AI Shopping Performance Expectancy (ASPE), AI Shopping Effort Expectancy (ASEE), and AI Adoption Social Influence (AASI) on consumers’ Intention to Use AI-Powered Shopping Tools (IUAIS), as well as the subsequent effect of intention on AI-Powered Shopping Tool Use Behavior (ASTUB). Data were collected through structured questionnaires from 283 Generation Z consumers in Ho Chi Minh City with prior experience using AI-powered features on e-commerce platforms. The results indicate that ASPE and AASI positively and significantly influence IUAIS whereas ASEE does not exhibit a significant effect. Furthermore, IUAIS strongly and positively predicts actual usage behavior. The study contributes to the literature by extending the application of UTAUT to the context of AI-assisted shopping and highlighting the importance of performance-related expectations and social influence in shaping consumer adoption. From a practical perspective, the findings suggest that e-commerce platforms and AI service providers should emphasize the tangible benefits of AI-powered shopping tools and leverage positive social influence to encourage consumer adoption and actual use.
